SHAH ALAM, April 13 — As Malaysians continue their celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has urged the public to take extra precautionary measures to avoid a surge in dengue cases.

In a Facebook post, the local authority pointed out that festive seasons are among several occasions when a high number of dengue infections are recorded due to the massive movement of the public.

“Therefore, we urge everyone to follow three simple steps to protect yourself and your family from aedes mosquito bites and stop the spread of the dengue virus,” it said today.

According to MBSA, the first measure, before leaving the house, is to ensure no containers that can collect water, such as canvas, polystyrene or buckets, are left outside, and that any water storage containers must be closed.

It said when at the respective hometowns, the public is also urged to avoid staying out in the open early in the morning or late in the evening if the location has been identified as an infected area.

Finally, once returning home, MBSA urged the public to spray aerosol around the house to kill any mosquitoes that may be present.

Meanwhile, the local council said it spent a staggering RM1.19 million throughout the whole of last year to prevent the spread of dengue cases.

A further RM84,731 was spent for the first two months of this year.
