TOKYO, March 13 — The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Grossi affirmed the agency's dedication to overseeing the controlled discharge of tritium-containing treated water from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan.
Grossi, in discussions with Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, reiterated the IAEA's commitment to monitor the process until the very last drop is released into the sea, according to Jiji Press.
Highlighting Japan's stance on transparency and safety, Hayashi emphasised the nation's intention to provide comprehensive explanations domestically and internationally, rooted in scientific evidence, regarding the safety measures implemented for the treated water.
Grossi is scheduled to visit the Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) Holdings Inc plant on Wednesday to assess the ongoing situation firsthand.
During his visit, he also engaged in separate discussions with Japanese Environment Minister Shintaro Ito and Industry Minister Ken Saito.
In a meeting with Saito, Grossi conveyed the IAEA's support for the potential restart of TEPCO's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant in Niigata Prefecture, central Japan.
Emphasising the agency's role in offering technical evaluation and assistance, Grossi assured that the IAEA has no intention of impeding the early resumption of operations at the facility.
