SHAH ALAM, March 8 — The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) has welcomed the amendments to the Administration of the Religion of Islam (State of Selangor) Enactment 2003, which was passed in the State Legislative Assembly yesterday.

Its chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said the amendments will further strengthen Islamic administration in the state.

“The amendment bill aims to improve the administration of Islamic affairs in Selangor, particularly regarding the management of Syariah court orders, the appointment of Syariah deputy prosecutors, the management of accreditation to teach Islam, and the empowerment of halal management.

“With the bill’s passing, Mais is committed to further enhancing the administration of Islam in Selangor in line with Syariah law, with cooperation from other Islamic agencies in the state,” he said in a statement today.

Aziz extended his appreciation to the state executive councillor for Islamic affairs Dr Fahmi Ngah for tabling the amendment bill, the state assemblymen for ensuring its passing, and others who have been involved in the document’s preparation.

He also hopes enforcing the amendments will serve as a benchmark for enhancing the administration of Islamic affairs, particularly regarding halal matters in Malaysia.

The amendment bill was debated in the State Legislative Assembly for two days before it was passed unanimously via a simple voice vote yesterday.

Previously, on February 19, Fahmi said parts of the amendments aim to ensure a more transparent process to appoint and verify the credentials of preachers in Selangor, particularly concerning the delivery of religious talks in mosques and suraus.

While the provision already exists within the Administration of the Religion of Islam (State of Selangor) Enactment, the state aims to update it.
