SHAH ALAM, March 2 — The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) continues its efforts to clear Sungai Kundang after detecting an oil spill, with works still ongoing as of 9am today.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the agency said the Luas team remains committed at the site, closely monitoring to ensure the cleanup is carried out thoroughly until completion, with no potential or risk of pollution.
"Cleanup works within the affected premises and along Sungai Kundang's vicinity near the Kundang cemetery area were completed between 6.00pm and 8.00pm yesterday.
"The focus of cleanup efforts is now on cleaning the external drains, which is at 50 per cent progress. Traces of contaminated flow still remain," Luas said.
The Sungai Kundang trash traps saw a buildup of dead fish due to the accumulated oil flow, with 33 sacks of dead fish having since been cleaned and removed, its cleanup work at a 70 per cent completion.
"Luas' static monitoring every 30 minutes at Sungai Sembah until 8.30am today indicated normal river flow conditions and no oil traces detected. The current situation is good and under control," it said.
The oil pollution along Sungai Kundang was first detected by a Luas patrol team yesterday afternoon. Agency personnel later discovered the pollution source came from several metal drums and intermediate bulk containers at a premise not far from the river.
