SHAH ALAM, Feb 24 — Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI channels nearly RM1 million in zakat wakalah funds to the asnaf (tithe recipients) annually.
Its corporate social responsibility head Ahmad Azri Zainal Nor said the distribution involves four categories of recipients, namely the needy, the poor, gharimin (debtors), and fisabilillah (an asnaf subcategory).

"Every year, MBI will pay zakat to the Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) before the month of Ramadan. Three-quarters of the payment amount will be returned to MBI to distribute wakalah zakat.
"Zakat applications from mosques, suraus, and other religious institutions will be brought to the MBI Zakat Management Committee meeting. The meetings are held monthly to review the applications," he told zakat .
Meanwhile, Azri also disclosed that MBI had extended RM3,000 in wakalah zakat yesterday to the family of ambulance driver Mohamad Anis Tacor, 48, who was involved in a road accident in February last year.
"We are also currently in the process of assisting the victim's family in submitting a monthly zakat assistance application to the LZS," he said.
Meanwhile, Mohamad's wife Aishah Awang, 47, said the contribution will be used for her husband's treatment costs and family expenses.
"Since my husband had an accident while on his way to work at the Tanjong Karang Hospital, I am the only breadwinner for the family.
"My salary as a Kafa teacher is insufficient to cover the family's needs, so I appreciate MBI's zakat contribution.
"In addition to medical expenses, I need to bear the expenses of my two children who are still in school. My eldest had to drop out of studies at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UITM) Raub to take care of my husband," she said.
