AMPANG JAYA, Feb 6 — The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) has appointed 175 enforcement officers as traffic wardens since February 1 last year, to address traffic violation issues more effectively.
Its president Ani Ahmad said the appointments come under the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333).
"Traffic wardens will enforce several regulations allowing actions like vehicle impoundment, wheel clamping, and issuing road traffic fines," she said.
Ani was speaking at the signing of the memorandum of understanding between MPAJ and CelcomDigi Berhad to implement its smart city project, at the MPAJ Convention Centre today.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari witnessed the event, and was also on hand to officiate the launch of the MPAJ traffic wardens.
She added the traffic wardens' appointment helped alleviate traffic congestion by up to 20 per cent, especially in high-density areas.
Since beginning their official duties last month, up to 700 traffic violation fines have been issued by MPAJ's enforcement officers.
"There have been no issues of jurisdiction overlap between the traffic police and the Road Transport Department (JPJ).
"We are merely assisting enforcement officers according to existing laws," she said.
