KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 — The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) has extended its appreciation to the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin for their visit to its headquarters today.
Bernama editor-in-chief (assuming duties of chief executive officer) Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin said the entire Bernama staff conveyed their sincere gratitude and joy for the royal visit.
“I personally feel fortunate as I was already part of the agency when His Royal Highness visited Bernama in 1986.
“So, I had the opportunity to brief His Royal Highness on several units that were once small but have since evolved, including the Photo Unit with its distinct roles such as Bernama Images, Bernama Digital Journal, and the latest equipment,” she said after the royal visit.
This was Sultan Sharafuddin’s second visit to Wisma Bernama after the first on July 10, 1986, when he was the Regent of Selangor.
Earlier, the royal visitors were welcomed upon arrival at 11am by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, and Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai.
Also present were Nur-ul, deputy editor-in-chief (News Service) Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, deputy editor-in-chief (Economic News Service) Nasriah Darus, and senior officials.
During this visit, Their Royal Highnesses spent some time touring a photography exhibition and examining a collection of media equipment, including cameras, drones, and bulletproof vests used by Bernama personnel.
Their Royal Highnesses also received a briefing on Bernama’s operations and visited the Editorial Department and Bernama TV news studio.
Meanwhile, Nur-ul said that she took note of Sultan Sharafuddin’s concern about the spread of fake news.
She said the Ruler had advised Bernama to help combat the dissemination of fake news comprehensively.
“With Bernama’s MyCheck unit, we have the opportunity and capacity to counter fake news,” Nur-ul said.
