Lack of supervision a key factor in police misconduct — Deputy IGP

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 — Lack of supervision over police officers and personnel is among the reasons why some are are involved in various misconduct, said Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay.

If this issue can be addressed, there will be fewer such cases.

“InsyaAllah, these cases will reduce. Supervision and acting without compromise is important, as this will restrain them (police officers and personnel) from misconduct.

“For example, two per cent from the police force are involved in misconduct while the remainder 98 per cent are okay, but although the percentage is minimal, they are the ones who tarnish the image of the Royal Malaysia Police in general.

“If there is sufficient evidence, we will arrest and immediately charge them in court,” he said during a special press conference today.

Ayob was asked to respond to recent incidents where members of the police force had been implicated in cases of drug possession, rape, extortion, and threats against the public.

He added that PDRM will not compromise with the involvement of police officers and personnel in any misconduct.

On whether there is a need to finetune recruitment standard operating procedures (SOP) of police officers and personnel, Ayob said the current SOP had no issues.

“Before joining (the police force), they seem to be okay, it could be that the environment after joining and challenges faced led them to take the wrong path," he said.
