No more 9-to-5 mentality: MB urges ‘reform’ mindset among civil servants

By Danial Dzulkifly

SHAH ALAM, Jan 15 — State civil servants must adopt a reform mindset as they enter 2024, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said today in urging for agility and a deeper understanding of their responsibilities.

In his inaugural monthly address for the year, Amirudin reminded civil servants and the state leadership that Selangor possesses a robust and dynamic socioeconomic landscape that demands constant and special attention.

He said 2024 is also the year when government servants will commence the implementation of various policies under the First Selangor Plan (RS-1), particularly establishing special economic zones and improving public infrastructure.

“We cannot maintain the same pace as in the past two or three years. We must be prepared for a faster rhythm, ready to handle new situations, including working beyond the regular working hours.

“This year, if we can implement our planned initiatives, we can fulfil the needs and hopes of the people, including supporting economic movers in the state, such as those in the manufacturing and services sectors.

“God willing, I believe with all these ingredients, we can be a state that pioneers changes, new ideas and approaches to showcase our success, not only to satisfy our ego, but as one of our responsibilities,” he said at the State Secretariat Building, here, today.

Amirudin also praised the state’s civil servants who have consistently performed exceptionally well, especially during crises.

“I’m confident that if everyone plays their part, from those serving at the front counter to those on the ground, as well as decision-makers, we will be a solid team with a strong foundation, similar to well-layered bricks,” he said.

In his address, Amirudin also urged civil servants to adapt to current challenges, especially in answering questions posed on social media.

“There will always be people who tend to find fault with anything and everything, even framing certain situations in a skewed manner,” he said, adding that public office bearers need to be ready to alleviate any concerns posed by members of the public.
