SHAH ALAM, Jan 13 — The recent endeavour by a group of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) students to develop a mini hydroponic garden supports Selangor's goal of achieving sustainable development (SDG).

Seri Serdang state assemblyman Abbas Azam praised the 'Melati Eco Garden' project initiated by Kolej Melati undergraduates to cultivate bok choy and salad greens, regarding it as an effort worthy of emulation.

"This will add to the green areas, which are already the state administration's focus. In Selangor, we support initiatives like this, including urban farming projects through community gardens.

"Simultaneously, it also hones the students' entrepreneurial skills, as the produce is also sold to the local community, thereby generating income," he said when officiating the garden today.

Abbas added the state government will always support such initiatives and is prepared to provide assistance in expanding SDG projects.

"The state government's agencies are ready to collaborate and assist students in further developing this mini garden. They are also willing to teach other planting techniques suitable for the area," he said.

In October last year, while delivering the Menteri Besar's speech text, state executive councillor for the environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said Selangor is fully focused on five sectors to support sustainable development and implement SDGs by 2035.

She said emphasis will be placed on the sectors of resilience and disaster management, low-carbon state, biodiversity and natural resources, water management, and waste.
