Govt warns telecom companies over extra charges for 5G access

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 18 — The government will consider acting against telecommunications companies charging their existing subscribers additional fees for accessing 5G services, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

He has made it clear to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) that telecommunication companies must ensure no additional charges for using 5G.

“It is essential to note the entire infrastructure cost, up to the point of signing the share subscription agreement (SSA), was funded by the public's money.

“Therefore, there should not be any extra fees. If they continue to impose such charges, we will have to consider taking action,” Fahmi said on the sidelines after the launch of OK Vision, a subscriber-based television service today.

He added that in his recent conversation with CelcomDigi Bhd's chief executive officer Mohamad Idham Nawawi, the company announced a revision of its packages.

“In its new packages, it eliminated the additional fees. This is what CelcomDigi conveyed to me,” Fahmi said.
