Global fund allocates 70pct of its capital to climate change vulnerable countries

DUBAI, Dec 5 — The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (Global Fund) announced that more than 70 per cent of its funding, totaling over US$9 billion, will be allocated over the next three years to support countries most heavily impacted by climate change, aiming to bolster health programmes.

"The fight against deadly infectious diseases must go hand in hand with addressing climate change,” said Global Fund executive director Peter Sands as reported by Emirates News Agency (WAM).

He further highlighted the severe consequences of the climate crisis on low- and middle-income countries with high disease burdens and fragile health systems, placing communities that have contributed minimally to global carbon emissions at significant risk.

The Global Fund's commitment involves providing rapid and flexible emergency support to nations at the forefront of climate disasters.

Additionally, it plans to invest more than US$2.9 billion in the next three years in the 50 countries most vulnerable to climate change.

This investment aims to strengthen health systems, making them more climate-resilient and better prepared to handle pandemic threats.
