DBKL builds multi-storey car parks in 14 public housing areas

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 14 — The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has built 14 multi-storey car parks in 14 Public Housing (PA) and People's Housing Project (PPR) areas to address the issue of lack of parking spaces.

In a statement, DBKL said building such a facility that provides 7,000 parking spaces took into consideration the high population density as well as the size of the existing sites.

Among the PA and PPR areas involved are the Pekan PPR in Kepong; Seri Sabah PA in Bandar Tun Razak; Jelatek PPR inTitiwangsa; and Seri Pantai PPR in Lembah Pantai .

According to DBKL, the initial policy for the provision of parking spaces was on the basis of one quarter (four PPR/PA units to one car) of the total number of units provided in an area, with between 80 and 300 parking spaces.

"This policy was based on the status of tenants who comprised those from the hardcore poor, poor and urban poor.

“However, there was a surge in vehicle numbers in each area in 2010 as the number of residents living in each housing unit increased due to growth of subsequent generations in a family."

Yesterday, Bernama reported on PPR car parking issues such as the lack of parking spaces which was also contributed by abandoned private vehicles in these parking spaces.

Also adding to the problem was various vehicles including buses, vans and cars being parked haphazardly such as double parking, parking along the side of the road or at designated bus stops thus narrowing the movement of traffic in these areas. These are all common sights in these residential areas.

In the meantime, DBKL said until this year, there are  67 PAs and PPRs  located in 11 parliamentary constituencies in Kuala Lumpur, with a total of 61,534 housing units offered to the public.
