SHAH ALAM, Nov 13 — The proposed setting up of a Selangor Centre for Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been described as an appropriate move to seize opportunities in the emerging field of new technology.

Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corporation (Sidec) chief executive officer Yong Kai Ping said the move is in line with the Selangor Digital School’s (SDS) goal of producing more talents in the AI field.

“SDS was established by Sidec to train 600 students on AI and integrate them into the industry through placements in technology companies to ensure more talents in the field.

"Our first class has already started this month with at least 30 students from Universiti Selangor’s computer science programme studying AI engineering," he told Selangorkini.

SDS is an educational initiative launched by the Selangor state government through Sidec for training and placement for digital marketing and AI professionals. It aims to equip students with digital literacy and skills, preparing them for the demands of the digital age.

Previously on Friday, when tabling the 2024 Selangor Budget, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced plans to establish a Selangor Centre for AI to ensure the state can seize the extensive opportunities in the industry.

He said RM1 million will be allocated by the state government for this purpose next year.

Amirudin said this effort will involve the forging of cooperation with technology companies specialising in AI to attract investments and provide job opportunities.
