KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 — The Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS), with its subsidiary PKNS FM Integrated Sdn Bhd (PKNS FMI), and Inter Great (M) Sdn Bhd, are collaborating to develop foreign workers' dormitories in the state.

PKNS FMI chief executive officer (CEO), Shamsul Bahari Ahmad, said the development, via a memorandum of understanding (MoU), will ensure the foreign workers' residential facilities, be it in temporary placement quarters (TLQ) or centralised worker quarters (CLQ), are more secure and well-planned.

The MoU, signed during the opening of the Selangor International Business Summit (SIBS) 2023 recently, can reduce construction costs while ensuring quality returns.

"The dormitories' design includes safety features, along with various amenities. This ensures the industrial workers' living conditions are better organised and safety standards are met.

"PKNS acts as the developer, while Inter Great is responsible for construction. Once completed, PKNS FMI will oversee the accommodations' management," he told SelangorKini.

Shamsul said under a long-term plan, PKNS aims to have 50,000 CLQ units built by 2032, with each project taking four years to complete.

"The PKNS Finance Committee meeting aims to have CLQs operating by 2027, and the organisation is committed to assisting in this endeavour, including obtaining temporary building permits. As for TLQ-type dormitories, PKNS aims to have 8,000 units built by next year," he said.

During SIBS 2023, Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari witnessed the MoU signing between Shamsul, PKNS CEO Datuk Mahmud Abbas, and Inter Great CEO Datuk Seri Chew Suen Wei.

In January of last year, Amirudin said worker residential complexes by the state government would be developed to ensure foreign workers' welfare and facilitate monitoring.

He said a 200-acre site has been identified to accommodate 60,000 workers, and the PKNS project will include laundromats, restaurants, and retail shops.
