SHAH ALAM, Oct 18 — The new waste-to-energy (WTE) plant in Jeram will be able to power 200,000 homes once it is completed at the end of 2025, said Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the plant will be able to manage nearly 43 per cent of the daily domestic waste in Selangor once it begins operating.

"At present, Selangor residents generate around 7,000 tonnes of domestic waste daily, accounting for 19 per cent of the total waste produced in Malaysia.

"This means the Jeram plant can handle 3,000 tonnes out of the 7,000 tonnes of daily domestic waste," Amirudin said in a Facebook post yesterday.

The Menteri Besar added the state cannot address waste management without first considering the entire process to begin with.

"Starting from the types of materials we use, how we dispose of waste and recycle at home, and transitioning away from single-use materials to create employment opportunities for waste collectors and operators at these power plants.

"The Jeram WTE plant, the first of its kind in Selangor, will become the largest WTE power plant in Malaysia," he said.

The initiative, carried out by state government subsidiary company Worldwide Holdings, in collaboration with Shanghai Electric Engineering, will handle domestic waste, which can be converted into energy to power 200,000 households.

"This aligns with the administration's efforts to ensure sustainable and responsible governance in the state. Towards a sustainable and sustainable future for Selangor," Amirudin said.
