AMPANG JAYA, Oct 16 — Pollution in the Selangor rivers caused by industrial, agricultural and development activities has decreased over the past three years, says the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas).

Its director Hasrolnizam Shaar said due to ongoing monitoring in collaboration with relevant agencies, there have been fewer water treatment plant (WTP) closures caused by pollution over the same period.

“Based on these developments, the water quality of 1,025 tributaries throughout Selangor is now classified as Class III (good), except for Sungai Damansara and Sungai Buloh, which are at a moderate level.

“All operations that could endanger the quality of the water have been identified, and we have implemented early controls.

“Moreover, samples are frequently collected from urban areas and rivers to examine the water quality. We aim to improve the water quality yearly,” he said when met at the World Rivers Day celebration and the Garbage Collection while Recreation (Kudah) programme Sungai Ampang in Kampung Muhibbah Ampang, here, yesterday.

Hasrolnizam said that Luas is also focused on restoring Sungai Klang, with cleaning works currently being carried out under the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) project.

“Efforts to remove waste and silt from the river are ongoing, especially near the estuary and at the end of Sungai Klang.

“To restore Sungai Klang’s uniqueness and functionality, we adopt a very close approach,” he added.
