Palm biodiesel continues to face headwinds due to EU, US rules

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 3 — Palm biodiesel continues to face headwinds in terms of the ban on palm biodiesel under the European Union's (EU) Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines, said the Malaysian Biodiesel Association (MBA) today.

MBA president UR Unnithan said RED III and US EPA guidelines had still singled out biodiesel fuel as an unsustainable source for production.

“This is unfair and I would like to use this platform to urge all of us, including the Malaysian government and those around the world, to build a global consensus around the big elephant in the room, which is the indirect land-use change (ILUC). ILUC is one reason that palm oil has been singled out and banned for export.

“Therefore, I urge all of us to work in a global consensus and use the metrics to prove that we do not cause deforestation and are truly a sustainable source,” he said in his speech at the 4th Palm Biodiesel Conference here today.

Themed “Balancing Carbon Neutrality, Energy Security and Social Impact”, the MBA-hosted conference over two and a half days (Oct 2-4) attracted more than 100 delegates.
