Year-end flood: Mosques, surau in Selangor to act as shelters

By Fitri Hazim Hazam

SHAH ALAM, Oct 3 — All mosques and surau in the state will open their doors to the public seeking shelter in the event of flooding caused by the current monsoon transition.

Selangor Islamic Religion Department (Jais) director Dato' Shahzihan Ahmad said these premises will serve as temporary relief centres (PPS) should the situation call for it.

In an internal circular, Shahzihan urged mosque and surau administrators to be constantly aware of information on weather changes issued by the Meteorological Department.

In this regard, he said facilities like praying areas and toilets should always be in good condition, besides ensuring sufficient water supply.

He also urged administrators to facilitate any form of assistance to those seeking shelter, regardless of race and religion.

"They must always remind congregants to ensure the cleanliness of drains in these premises so that water flow is not disrupted during the monsoon season.

"Activities like gotong-royong should also be conducted more frequently by mosques and surau," he said today.

The country is currently facing the monsoon transition phase, which is expected to persist until November, before the northeast monsoon begins.

During this period, frequent thunderstorms and heavy rains can be expected, with higher average rainfall that could lead to flooding.

States along the west coast of the peninsula are expected to be affected, including Selangor.
