Using religion to sow division unreasonable, refer to proper channels instead — Exco

SHAH ALAM, Sept 17 — Selangor's residents have been advised to refer to the proper channels before making arguments using the name of religion.

The state executive councillor for Islamic Affairs Mohammad Fahmi Ngah said making such arguments to divide unity is highly inappropriate and should not even occur.

"During the Friday sermon (on September 15), fatwas were mentioned and which (fatwas) should be followed by the people. In Selangor, we have an official channel (the Mufti Department).

"Refer to the official channel for a proper understanding of Islam. Islam is a religion for all and a true religion, so there is no need to use religion for the purpose of dividing unity," he said.

Mohammad Fahmi was speaking to the press during the Serumpun Bak Serai, Sesusun Bak Sirih seminar on a diverse society, organised by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department at Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah yesterday.

He added the success of Islam in spreading throughout the world was due to the mutual respect among different communities, and the unity among Muslims.

"It is this unity which has made Islam successful worldwide, both economically, politically, and socially," Mohammad Fahmi said.

On September 12, the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj called on political leaders not to exploit religion in gaining support, by forcing the people for personal gain.

His Royal Highness also emphasised the need to stop the irresponsible issuance of fatwas, to preserve the unity of the people in Malaysia.
