Indonesian president urges Asean cooperation against cross-border crimes

JAKARTA, Aug 22 — Indonesian President Joko Widodo has called on Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) member states to strengthen their collective efforts in combating cross-border crimes.

Addressing the 17th Asean Ministerial Meeting on Trans-border Crime on Monday (Aug 21) in East Nusa Tenggara province, Widodo emphasised the importance of fostering enduring partnerships that encompass information sharing, technological utilisation, and enhanced capabilities and professionalism within law enforcement.

In the face of global dynamics, the Indonesian president urged Asean to remain poised to confront challenges, particularly the eradication of transnational crimes that pose severe threats to regional security and stability.

With this in mind, he stressed the necessity for an adaptable approach to combatting these offenses, especially in the realms of terrorism, human trafficking, and the illegal narcotics trade, Vietnam News Agency reported.

The president expressed hope that the gathering would yield a comprehensive cooperation agenda, incorporating strategic measures aimed at preserving a secure, tranquil, and prosperous Asean region.
