Swimmer Li Hen delivers Malaysia's first gold at 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games 

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 — Swimmer Goh Li Hen bagged the country’s first gold medal at the ongoing 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) in Trinidad and Tobago.

The 17-year-old emerged victorious in the men’s 200m butterfly event at the National Aquatic Centre in Couva on Wednesday evening.

Li Hen took the title after clocking two-minutes and 03.63 seconds in the final, while England’s Reuben Rowbotham-keating (2:03.84s) and Jarden Dylan Eaton (2:06.07s) of South Africa secured the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Meanwhile, track cyclist Nur Alyssa Mohd Farid added medal glitter to the Malaysian contingent after clinching the women’s sprint event silver.

The 17-year-old missed the gold after going down to Scotland's Sarah Johnson in the final at the National Cycling Velodrome.

Another cyclist, Lau New Joe delivered the country’s first medal in the 2023 CYG, known as Trinbago 2023 after winning bronze in the men’s road race on Monday.

“I am very happy and proud of our athletes today. All those who competed today gave their best, and we are fortunate to have secured the gold and silver medals from Li Hen and Nur Alyssa.

“Thursday marks the final day for our national athletes to compete in the track cycling, and I hope we end the campaign on a high note,” Chef-de –Mission Ang Li Peng said in a statement posted in Olympic Council of Malaysia’s (OCM) official Facebook.n

Malaysia are now placed joint 13th with Guyana in the medal standings, after both had won one gold, silver and bronze each, while Australia top the chart with 18-14-16, followed by England (15-17-7) and Scotland (10-8-2).
