SHAH ALAM, Aug 8 — The voter turnout for the early polling of the state elections in Selangor, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu was high as the centres closed at 5pm today.
The three polling centres at the Terengganu police contingent headquarters (IPK) for the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election were also closed at the same time.
In a statement, the Election Commission (EC) said approximately 72,554 people consisting of members of the Malaysian Armed Forces, the General Operations Force, the police, and their spouses, turned out to cast their ballots.
"The number of voters who turned out in terms of percentage is Selangor at 95.87 per cent, Penang at 95.01 per cent, Negeri Sembilan at 94.05 per cent, Kedah at 96.02 per cent, Kelantan at 93.90 per cent, and Terengganu at 95.91 per cent.
"For the P.036 Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election, 1,286 voters or 95.47 per cent cast their votes," said the EC's secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak.
He thanked the voting officers and their teams for carrying out their duties well, and the early voters and their spouses, along with the Information Department and media personnel for their support in the matter.
The state polls involve 56 state seats in Selangor, 40 in Penang, 36 in Negeri Sembilan, 36 in Kedah, 45 in Kelantan, and 32 in Terengganu.
The EC has set the polling date for the state elections and the Kuala Terengganu by-election to August 12, while the 14-day campaigning period which began on July 29 concludes at 11.59pm on August 11.
