Km66.1 of KL-Karak highway reopens after sinkhole repaired

KUANTAN, July 28 — Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway (KLK) concessionaire Anih Bhd today announced the reopening of Km66.1 of the highway, which was closed due to a sinkhole.

In its statement here today, the concessionaire said the route was reopened after carrying out comprehensive resolution measures and appropriate assessments.

“Anih Bhd remains committed to maintaining the highest safety standards and continuous monitoring of road conditions.

“The safety and wellbeing of all road users are our top priorities at all times,” said the statement.

It said when the sinkhole occurred, all parties, including police, the Fire and Rescue Department and Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL), which is the owner of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), made immediate assessments and took prompt remedial action with the approval of the Malaysia Highway Board (LLM).

The swift repairs allowed the eastbound route to be reopened late Wednesday night, while the Kuala Lumpur-bound route was open to traffic at 10am yesterday.

The sinkhole, measuring 9.5 metres wide, 10 metres long and 4.3 metres deep, opened on Tuesday night, and is believed to have been caused by ECRL construction in the area.

No casualties were reported, and MRL assured it would perform a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident.
