Telcos reach agreement on equity participation in DNB — Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 — CelcomDigi, Maxis, Telekom Malaysia, U Mobile and YTL Communications will conclude the shareholding process in 5G agency Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said today.

Fahmi said the telcos will finalise share ownership talks and support the development of DNB’s 5G network until it covers 80% of populated areas at year-end, before switching to a dual network model in as early as January.

“The service providers will take all appropriate governance measures to complete this process,” he said in a statement today.

The Malaysian 5G Dual Network Implementation Task Force is co-chaired by Treasury director-general Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican and Communications and Digital Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa.

Fahmi said as of June 30, DNB’s 5G network infrastructure has reached 64.7% coverage in populated areas.

The minister said Maxis has begun its process to sign a 5G access deal with DNB after several issues were finalised on July 11.

“Maxis customers will start enjoying 5G services once Maxis gets shareholder approval at its extraordinary general meeting (EGM) next month.

“CelcomDigi, Telekom Malaysia, U Mobile and YTL Communications have already been offering 5G services since signing a 5G access agreement with DNB last year,” he said.

Fahmi said his ministry, with the cooperation of all parties, will ensures the government’s aspirations are realised through inclusivity, transparency and comprehensiveness to guarantee the best quality for the Malaysia Madani society.
