KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 — A total of 90 per cent of 8,820 additional Electric Train Service (ETS) KL Sentral-Padang Besar and KL Sentral-Butterworth two-way tickets have been sold since March 24 till now.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said four additional trains were added due to high demand from the public after regular northbound tickets for ETS and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) Intercity services from April 19 to 25 were sold out.
“This is the government’s effort to ensure that more Malaysians can return to their hometowns using public transport even though we have limited capacity,” he told reporters after distributing 1,000 Hari Raya packs at KL Sentral Station here today.
Besides the northbound route, KTMB also offered the Lambaian Aidilfitri Special Express Train service for those heading to the East Coast, he said, adding that the service is between KL Sentral and Tumpat Station, with four return journeys of 1,864 tickets.
As of today, 1,685 tickets for the service have been sold.
Meanwhile, on the Sarawak government’s suggestion to set up a boutique airlines, Loke said it will be discussed at tomorrow’s Cabinet meeting.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday agreed to the suggestion in principle and said the airlines could address the high airfares between Peninsular Malaysia with Sabah and Sarawak.
