SHAH ALAM, March 17 — The state government has installed solar-powered light-emitting diode (LED) lights in all 56 state constituencies, at a cost of RM100,000, said the state executive councillor for the environment Hee Loy Sian.

He said the initiative, via Projek Selangor Penyayang, utilises funds from Tabung Akaun Amanah Kutipan Caj Beg Plastik, which is coordinated by the Selangor's Economic Planning Unit.

"The state government considers the installation of these LED lights as a positive move, as it improves safety for local residents and reduces the cost of maintaining street lights by the local authorities.

"Using solar lights will also save on energy, and encourages green technology usage among the community, as well as making Selangor a low-carbon state," Hee said.

The councillor was speaking during the wind-up session on the debate over the royal speech by Sultan Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, during the State Legislative Assembly sitting, earlier today.

Simultaneously, NGOs are also actively installing the lights in recreational areas, along roads, and in residential blocks.

"Doing so will be able to contribute to the environment's preservation and conservation, through the use of high-quality green technology products.

"It also helps to achieve a reduction in the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 45 per cent, by 2030," he said.

In conjunction with the assembly's opening ceremony on Monday (March 13), Sultan Sharafuddin expressed the wish for Selangor to continue in its efforts to being a sustainable and green state, in line with various technologies that have developed over time in of support environmental protection.

His Royal Highness also decreed for environmental laws and enforcement activities to be further augmented, as environment deterioration will have an impact on the people's well-being.
