SHAH ALAM, March 12 — Welfare homes residents who have reached the age of 18 now stand a chance at attending a free skills course for a period of six months, courtesy of the state government.
State executive councillor for human capital development Mohd Khairuddin Othman said the course is part of the effort to secure the lives and futures of these individuals, once they leave their respective homes.
"It has come to our attention that many of them have nowhere to go after leaving the shelters.
"Consequently, during a meeting with the Selangor Technical Skills Development Center (STDC), we made it mandatory for all welfare home residents to take a technical course there.
"The course lasts for six months, and upon completing it the participants should be able to look for employment," he said.
Speaking to the press after the Back-To-School — Selangor Prihatin programme earlier today, Mohd Khairuddin said the course fees will be fully sponsored by the state government, through Inisiatif Kemahiran Teknikal dan Iktisas Smart Selangor (Iktisass).
"The course itself is very affordable, and the state government will pay for it. So the participants simply have to study. It is also open to youths interested in participating in a short-term skills course at the STDC campus in Kuala Selangor," he said.
Among the skills programmes offered by STDC include automotive, spray paint, electrics, fashion, spa therapy, culinary, air conditioning, and pastries.
STDC is a state government initiative under Agenda Pendidikan Unggul, which is a part of the 2020 Selangor Budget.
Through this, it offers a variety of high-quality technical and vocational training with high-impact, geared towards the Industrial Revolution 4.0.
