Support plastic-free campaign, shoppers are advised to bring their own bags

HULU LANGAT, Feb 9 — Visitors to the Jelajah Ehsan Rakyat (JER) roadshow are advised to bring reusable bags for their purchased items even though the Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation (PKPS) supplies plastic bags.

Its officer Nazira Ahmad said wet goods are already packed but the cooperation of customers bringing their own bags can reduce the use of plastic bags to carry rice and cooking oil.

She said the agency would charge 20 cents if customers asked for additional plastic bags to educate them to bring their own bags, thus making the plastic-free campaign organised by the state government a success.

"Visitors only need to bring their own bags to put items in if they buy a lot. If you still need (extra) plastic bags, we charge 20 cents for each bag.

"Actually, without plastic bags, purchases will be faster," he said when met at the PKPS sale at Surau Al-Amin Taman Cheras Prima, here today.

Meanwhile, Nazira informed that the programme, which started at 10am, was visited by more than 300 residents to obtain basic necessities at affordable prices.

"Eggs, chicken, fish and meat ran out at about 11.45am and we allowed all items to be bought at more than one unit except for eggs," she said.

On February 5, PKPS through Facebook suggested that visitors to the affordable sale bring their own bags to fill their purchased items to support the plastic-free campaign.

Selangor started banning the use of plastic bags every Saturday from 2009, before expanding to seven days a week from 2017.
