Terengganu fully recovers from floods; 264 evacuees in three other states

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 8 — Floods have fully receded in Terengganu but a total of 264 victims were still taking shelter at relief centres in Pahang, Kedah and Johor as of 8pm tonight.

In Terengganu, the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) Secretariat said in a statement that the relief centre (PPS) at SK Lembah Jabor was closed at 10am, today after the 18 evacuees in Kemaman district were allowed to return home.

In Pahang, the situation in Kuantan has continued to improve with only four PPS still in operation tonight, housing 220 victims from 62 families, compared to 13 PPS this afternoon.

The JPBN Secretariat said one PPS was opened in Jerantut, at SMK Pusat Penyelidikan Pertanian Tun Razak (PPPTR) this afternoon, after the water levels of Sungai Tekam and Sungai Siam rose.

"The rise in river levels was due to increased water flow from upstream following heavy rain yesterday, and nearby residents had been evacuated earlier for fear the water level might rise rapidly tonight,” it said.

The evacuation involved 12 people from five families.

In Kedah, 18 people from six families in Kulim district were still housed at the Sekolah Menengah Agama Madrasah Insaniah Jangkang PPS tonight.

Kulim District Disaster Management Committee Secretariat officer Captain (PA) Amirul Aliff Ahmad said the victims were from Kampung Padang Limau.

“The number of victims at the PPS is the same as this afternoon,” he said in a statement.

In Johor, the JPBN said the number of evacuees tonight remained at 26 people from nine families, placed at the Balai Raya Kampung Seberang Batu Badak PPS in Segamat.

It was raining at night in Segamat and Sungai Bekok in Batu Pahat was still above the danger level with a reading of 18.9 metres.
