SHAH ALAM, Feb 4 — Residents of Sekinchan welcome the initiative which made the constituency the first cashless village in Malaysia.
Its assemblyman Ng Suee Lim said this was proven when all premises including morning market stalls have a QR code for customers to scan and pay online.
“This cashless implementation makes it easier for tourists, especially foreigners, to deal with traders in Sekinchan and this measure also guarantees their safety because they do not need to carry a lot of cash.
"In fact, recently, there was also a fundraising campaign for the temple and interestingly many also donated just by scanning the QR code. This is an interesting innovation," he said to SelangorKini.
The representative added that traders began to accept the method even though it was difficult at first and took a more cautious attitude to change in that direction.
"However, when our team went to ground to give information about the importance and positive effects of cashless trading, it finally yielded results and people begin accepting it,” he said.
Previously, Sekinchan was selected as the first cashless village in Malaysia by Hong Leong Bank Bhd (HLB) in collaboration with Payments Network Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PayNet) through the Visit Sekinchan 2023 campaign.
HLB group managing director and chief executive officer Domenic Fuda informed that the state was selected due to its location and its attraction to foreign and domestic tourists.
