PETALING, Jan 9 — The state government plans to create educational grants for youth golfers who want to continue their studies relating to the sport abroad.

The Selangor State Secretary Dato’ Haris Kasim said the allocation of grants amounting to RM100,000 per person is to give players the opportunity to hone their talents in the sport.

"We agree to create a grant for any young player (children of Selangor) who wants to continue golf-related studies abroad.

"Selangor accepts this challenge so that we can produce more players who have potential for the country," he said when met at the 2023 Selangor International Junior Golf Championship at Seri Selangor Golf Club, here yesterday.

Haris said the state government will set some specific criteria to give youth players the opportunity to continue his studies abroad.

"There are certain criterias and it is not necessary that only the best will be selected, rather the player must have strength and be eligible to be sent," he said.

Earlier, a total of 105 teenage players between the ages of 12 and 18 competed in the tournament which took place from January 5 to January 8.

The tournament organised by UUM International School Melaka (UUMISM) in collaboration with the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) involved players from Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, the Philippines and Indonesia for the group category.

While the individual category included players from India, Canada, Hong Kong, China, Japan and Malaysia.

The national men's team emerged as the champion of the tournament by defeating the South Korean team with a total of 683 points.
