SHAH ALAM, Jan 4 — The Selangor government will set up the Yayasan Insan Istimewa Selangor (YaNIS) to empower disabled persons (OKUs) at state level.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said through the foundation, the state government will expand various initiatives, programmes and activities for OKUs with a total allocation of RM4 million.

“Before this, most of the initiatives focused more on OKUs aged 18 and below. Through Yanis, the group’s welfare will be more protected.

“We are not prioritising welfare aspects such as providing financial assistance on a one-off basis solely but also committed to emphasising on OKUs’ empowerment holistically.

“This effort is aligned with Selangor's vision to be an OKU-friendly state,” he said in a Facebook post today.

On December 3, 2022, Selangor Welfare Department director Zaitol Salleh said there are presently 110,264 OKUs in the state, which accounts for approximately 1.59 per cent of the 6.9 million residents in Selangor.
