SHAH ALAM, Dec 18 — This year has seen RM500,000 in allocations utilised to deal with the issue of violence against women, said state executive councillor of women and family development Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud.

She said the amount went to initiatives like shelter grants, and the operation of a hotline for domestic violence complaints.

"The fund also involves today's programme, aimed at raising awareness on the abuse of women. Violence against women can be prevented through awareness, education and policy changes.

"In July this year, the Sexual Harassment Act Bill was passed to guarantee the safety and protection of women. In addition, under the Employment (Amendment) Act 2022 employers are required to post sexual harassment notices as a preventive measure at the workplace," Dr Siti Mariah said.

She was speaking at the 2022 Selangor Orange Run and Exhibition Programme yesterday, as part of a campaign to prevent sexual harassment.

The programme, in conjunction with Klang Car-Free Day and the Heritage, Cultural Arts and Tourism Festival organized by the Klang Municipal Council, saw over 500 participants.

Earlier this month, the state government introduced the Geran Rumah Lindungan initiative, with RM200,000 in funds to launch the operation of women's care centres.
