MBPJ Junior Open Tennis Championships attract 175 players

PETALING JAYA, Dec 14 — The 32nd edition of the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Junior Open Tennis Championships scheduled from December 17 to December 21, has attracted 175 local and foreign players.

The total participation of 175 players who will be competing at three different venues based on their respective categories, comprising 169 local players and six foreign players namely three from Singapore, two from Australia and one from India.

The three venues identified to host the championships are MBPJ Sports Complex in Kelana Jaya; SS 3/14, Kelana Jaya and Astaka Sports Complex in Petaling Jaya.

The championships will feature five age group categories - Under eight years old (mini tennis), 10 years, 12 years, 14 years and Under-16 years - and players will participate in girls and boys' singles and doubles competitions.

Selangor Tennis Association (STA) vice president Tengku Datuk Mohamed Alhaj Tengku Harun said the championships which is sanctioned by the Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia (LTAM) will offer ranking points for National junior players to accumulate such points that will enable them to play in international competitions.

"Ranking points are only offered to National junior players and not for the six foreign players. With this recognition, I hope in the future more players will participate in the championships,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of MBPJ, Mohamad Azhan Md Amir said the championships will certainly serve as a platform for talented young players from the country to showcase and compete against players from foreign countries to measure their performance.

“The championships can also provide good exposure for young players who will be competing against players from other countries," he said.
