SHAH ALAM, Dec 9 — The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) plans to expand its recycling facilities to educate the people on the responsibility of environmental protection.

Its mayor Dr Nor Fuad Abdul Hamid said that currently there are 16 recycling centres provided to the public under the purview of the city council.

“As of November, 223 metric tonnes of used materials including paper, aluminium cans, clothes, glass bottles and drink boxes were collected from the Community Recycling Centre in Section U13.

“Therefore, we are planning to open more recycling centres with the latest addition located in Section U16, which is currently under construction, while the first centre opened in Section 2 is undergoing refurbishment,” he said in his speech during the launch of the Community Recycling Centre in Section U13 and the 5R Carnival, here yesterday.

The event was launched by state executive councillor for the environment Hee Loy Sian.

Meanwhile, Nor Fuad said that the city council is actively implementing recycling programmes in schools and communities.

“This includes appointing the zero-waste ambassador (DOS) for the 2022/2023 term, who would be the one conveying the information and executing competitions using recycled cooking oil.

“The DOS programme was introduced in 2019 and had shown a positive impact in disseminating information and showed increased participation within the community in recycling efforts,” he said.
