SHAH ALAM, Dec 9 — The state government will look into the implementation of separating waste in households and bring the matter to the Selangor State Executive Council.

State executive councillor for environment Hee Loy Sian said he would first need to hold discussions with state executive councillor for local government Ng Sze Han.

He said the programme is quite complicated and challenging but helpful in recycling efforts if successful.

“To make the household waste separation programme a success, it will involve relatively high costs due to the increase in prices, which includes weekly truck collection as well as provision of multiple bins.

“It is not an easy matter but it will be implemented in the future. However, the community needs to be made aware of the garbage problems they face,” he said during the launch of the Community Recycling Centre in Section U13 and the 5R Carnival programme, here yesterday.

Also present was Shah Alam mayor Nor Fuad Abdul Hamid.

Since September 1, 2015, the Federal government had mandated the separation of solid waste at home which involves Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Pahang, Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Perlis and Kedah states under the regulations of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleaning Act 2007 (Act 672).

Separation can be classified into several types of waste including paper, plastic, metal cans, glass, fabric waste, electrical waste, garden waste and hazardous waste.
