West Java earthquake : PM Lee conveys condolences to President Jokowi

SINGAPORE, Nov 22 — Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has conveyed his condolences to Indonesian President Joko Widodo on the earthquake that took place in West Java, Indonesia, on Monday (November 21) that killed 268 people.

“On behalf of the Government of Singapore, I express my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of the victims and those affected by the disaster,” said Lee in his letter to Jokowi today.

The text of the letter is appended to the media.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the government and people of Indonesia during this difficult time,” he said.

It was reported that apart from the 268 deaths, there are 1,083 people injured and 151 remain missing based on data compiled as at 5pm local time.

“I was deeply saddened to hear about the loss of many lives caused by the earthquake. I am confident that Indonesia will overcome this adversity and recover quickly. Please let me know if Singapore can be of any assistance in the relief efforts,” Lee said further.

Jokowi on Tuesday (November 22) visited Cugenang town in Cianjur district, the epicentre of the magnitude-5.6 quake that displaced over 56,362 people after 21,282 houses were damaged, with around 6,570 collapsed.

Meanwhile, the republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said Singapore’s Embassy in Jakarta is in close contact with the local authorities on the situation.

“There are currently no reports of Singaporeans among the casualties or injured. MFA will continue to monitor the developments closely,” said the ministry in a statement.
