Choose responsible leaders in GE15, NGO urges voters after LRT debacle

By Jerry Choong

SHAH ALAM, Nov 12 — Malaysians have been urged to exercise their rights in the ongoing 15th general election and elect candidates who can truly carry out their responsibilities.

This was the opinion of the Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia president Datuk Nadzim Johan, who reflected on the popular discontent caused by the recent shutdown of 16 Light Rail Train (LRT) stations under Prasarana Berhad.

"The disruption of the train services has affected the travels of commuters, be it for work, business or even use by students.

"Not all of the people have vehicles, and those who do may only have motorcycles. With the rainy season now, many fully depend on public transport, particularly the LRT service," he said in a statement.

Nadzim criticised what he described as 'late excuses' by the authorities in charge, which is indicative of an uncaring attitude by the government towards the people.

"Too many were affected, who could not do business, go to their workplaces, students who wanted to go to school or colleges, all disrupted. And the responsible parties can dare to issue a statement saying they do not know the cause of the disruption of the service under their purview?

"Merely stating they do not know and ordering an investigation, are not the actions of responsible leaders!" he said.

The 16 stations, running along the Kelana Jaya Line, had their operations suspended from November 9 to November 15 due to a reported malfunction of the LRT's automatic train control system.

The affected stations include Kelana Jaya, Taman Bahagia, Taman Paramount, Asia Jaya, Taman Jaya, Universiti, Kerinchi, Bangsar, Abdullah Hukum, KL Sentral, Pasar Seni, Masjid Jamek, Dang Wangi, Kampung Baru, KLCC, and Ampang Park.
