KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 — A total of 14 teams are set to slog it out for the Petaling Jaya Mayor's Cup at the inaugural 2022 MBPJ-KRS Boys' Under-16 10-a-side rugby tournament at the Padang Astaka in Petaling Jaya from November 12 to 13.
Selangor Rugby (KRS) honorary secretary Tan Thiam Jin said the 14 teams comprise eight district rugby sides, two state rugby training centre teams, two district rugby excellence centre outfits and two invitational teams.
“This tournament will also serve as a platform to select players to represent Selangor in the Malaysia Schools Sports Council (MSSM) Under-18 rugby tournament in 2023 and the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in 2024.
“We hope this tournament will help bridge the gap between rugby played at the Under-16 school level and the Sukma (Under-21) level,” he said in a statement today.
Meanwhile, Petaling Jaya City Council (MPBJ) Mayor Mohamad Azhan Md Amir said the positive performances of the Selangor age-group teams this year were the catalyst behind their decision to organise the tournament.
“We hope to create a pool of players for our Selangor teams across the various age groups and provide an opportunity to all potential players to represent Selangor. We have also discussed with KRS plans to submit a rugby development programme for the Petaling Utama District to be implemented next year,” he said.
Selangor bagged silver in both the men's and women's events at the recently-concluded Sukma 2022 and also finished third in the MSSM 2022 Under-18 tournament.
