SHAH ALAM, Oct 28 — The state government has allocated close to RM2.3 million to low-income Indian families in Selangor, in conjunction with Deepavali which was celebrated last week.

State executive councillor for social welfare V Ganabatirau said the assistance came in the form of RM100 Jom Shopping shopping vouchers and is meant to help recipients fulfil their festive needs.

"Approximately RM2.295 million was distributed in accordance with the state constituency quotas. The main targets are the poor and those with many dependents.

"This initiative will help ease the burden of the people when they carry out shopping activities at selected supermarkets in their respective areas," he told SelangorKini yesterday.

The Jom Shopping Raya initiative was introduced by the state government for those from the low-income B40 group, aimed at upholding the people’s welfare and well-being.

The aid is handed over at community service centres for each state constituency, based on the ethnic group and festival in question.

For this year, RM8 million has been allocated for Jom Shopping Raya for all festivals, of which RM3.34 million was reserved for Hari Raya Aidilfitri in May.
