Former broadcasting DG dies today

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 — Former Director-General of Broadcasting Datuk Abdullah Mohamad died at 5 am today at a private hospital here.

This was confirmed by his son, Datuk Mohamad Arif Abdullah when contacted by Bernama.

He said his father’s remains would be brought to the At-Taqwa Mosque in TTDI for the funeral prayer.

The remains will be buried at the Bukit Kiara Muslim Cemetery after the Zohor prayer today, he added.

Abdullah, 91, among the pioneer television producers in Malaysia, was appointed Director-General of Broadcasting in 1975 and retired in 1986.

Among Radio Television Malaysia’s (RTM) achievements under his administration were the introduction of colour television broadcasts in Malaysia and the expansion of RTM television broadcasts to Sabah and Sarawak.

Abdullah, from Muar, Johor, ventured into broadcasting in January 1954 as an announcer and translator and then served at the Malay Division of the British Broadcasting Corporation, London, from 1957 to 1962.

He was the founder and first president of the Association of RTM Veterans (PVRTM),

In 2010, he was awarded the Tokoh Seri Angkasa award and in 2012 was awarded the NPC-Ambank Media Legend Award by National Press Club in recognition of his contribution to the country’s media industry.

Abdullah left a widow, Datin Marion Abdullah and four children.
