KLANG, Oct 10 — Close to RM1 million has been spent by Selangor to cover the bus fare for approximately 3,269 Tamil vernacular school students for this year, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said the bus fare is meant to ensure students from the Indian community face any obstacles in the pursuit of knowledge.
"Recipient students get RM300 per person, with the distribution process completed. These are students from B40 low-income families," Amirudin said.
He was speaking at the closing ceremony of the Selangor Indian Empowerment and Entrepreneurs Development (i-SEED) Carnival in Dataran Chetty, which ran from Friday (October 7) until yesterday (October 9).
The Menteri Besar added the state government has allocated over RM5 million in the past several years to aid some 97 Tamil vernacular schools throughout Selangor.
"There is not a single SJKT who did not receive this donation. We have distributed aid to all the schools in Selangor, to improve the education quality," he said.
In May, Amirudin announced that RM26.5 million would be allocated for the improvement of primary and secondary schools' infrastructure in the state.
The funds are meant specifically for schools which have not received full assistance from the Federal government.
