Face masks in mosques, suraus still mandatory — Jais

SHAH ALAM, Sept 9 — The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) has said wearing face masks is still compulsory for congregants in mosques and suraus throughout the state, following the Health Ministry's announcement of loosened restrictions regarding the protective wear.

Harian Metro reported its director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad as saying for the time being, the loosened restrictions concerning face masks do not apply for any of Selangor's religious institutions.

"We take note of the newest announcement by the Health Ministry on face masks. However, wearing it is still mandatory in mosques or suraus in the state, and we await the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj's consent on the new guidelines soon," he said during a project completion ceremony for Masjid Raja Lumu in Pekan Lama Kuala Selangor earlier today.

Mohd Shahzihan added that Jais will announce the new guidelines, once consent has been given by the Selangor Palace.

On Wednesday (September 7), Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the wearing of face masks at indoor areas is no longer compulsory, after taking into account the current developments of the Covid-19 pandemic.
