SHAH ALAM, Aug 2 — The implementation of a minimum monthly wage of RM1,600 for workers in Selangor needs to take into account the financial position of the employing companies, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the Selangor government could not introduce policies based on populist moves since it could have long-term effects on the state, especially financially.

“We have taken note of the matter and it will be studied by state executive councillor for employee empowerment V Ganabatirau.

“The RM100 salary increase (from RM1,500) may be seen as small, but we should also look at the financial position of the company involved to ensure it will not become a burden,” Amirudin said during the winding-up session of the First Selangor Plan (RS-1) at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly here today.

Previously, during the RS-1 debate session, Kota Damansara state assemblyman Shatiri Mansor requested the minimum wage for workers in the state be raised to RM1,600.

The Federal government has approved the implementation of a minimum wage of RM1,500 per month nationwide from May 1 involving large companies and government-linked companies (GLCs).

The minimum wage was last raised in February 1, 2020, which saw it increase by RM100 to RM1,200 per month.
