SHAH ALAM, July 25 — Selangor has garnered approximately RM7.51 billion in total investment for 2021, said state executive councillor for trade and investment Dato’ Teng Chang Khim.

He said this is based on official figures from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida).

“In 2021, a total of 247 manufacturing projects were approved by Mida in Selangor, involving a total investment of RM7.51 billion.

“Of that figure, RM6.05 billion are domestic investment while RM1.46 billion are foreign investments, which have created 14,393 employment opportunities,” said Teng.

He was responding to a query from Kuala Kubu Baharu state assemblyman Lee Kee Hiong on Selangor’s investments last year, during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly here today.

Teng also replied to a supplementary question from Meru state assemblyman Mohd Fakhrulrazi Mohd Mokhtar, who enquired if the employment opportunities were being filled by local or foreign workers.

“Selangor already has a policy and guideline in place where only certain top posts can be filled by expatriates brought in by the companies such as the chief executive officer, chief operating officer and managing director, as certain industries like biotechnology or electronics require experts. These experts will also enable the process of technology transfer to the locals.

“So nearly 90 per cent of the employment opportunities created were filled by locals as the process is being strictly monitored by the International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) through Mida, since foreign workers permit needed input from Mida before it is approved by the Immigration Department, “ he said.

Earlier in his reply to Lee’s query Teng said that although Selangor planned for one international trade mission abroad last year, it was cancelled due to the border closure caused by Covid-19 and was instead replaced with 10 webinar sessions with foreign companies.

Among the countries that Selangor engaged with during the sessions with the global business community include Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Turkey, Europe and India.
