SHAH ALAM, July 6 — The Selangor Department of Environment (DOE) yesterday found 100 intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) containing various waste materials that are suspected to have caused the water in Sungai Chandong, Pulau Indah, near here to turn red recently.
Its director Nor Aziah Jaafar said the discovery was made following a raid at a premise in Pulau Indah, Port Klang, which allegedly operated as an illegal waste collection centre. A tanker was also found at the premises.
“During yesterday's raid, which was also joined by Klang Municipal Council enforcement personnel, a total of 100 IBCs containing various wastes such as paint, ink, used acid and used black oil were found.
"Besides that, the DOE also found traces of red pigment waste on the top cover of the tanker. Several waste samples were taken to be sent to the Department of Chemistry Malaysia (JKM) for analysis," she said in a statement today.
She said the investigation into the offences under sections 34B, 34A, 18 and 19 of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, focused on the owners of the premises and the illegal operators involved.

On June 30, State Tourism and Environment Committee chairman Hee Loy Sian reportedly said he suspected that there was effluent discharge activity in the Pulau Indah industrial area which caused the water of Sungai Chandong to turn red.
