Smart Rent scheme helps more people own homes

HULU LANGAT, June 20 — Nearly 1,000 houses have been occupied through the Smart Rent scheme since it was introduced in 2015.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the number is expected to increase to 4,000 as more home seekers from the low-income group will be assisted within the next three years.

“In 2018, we only rented out around 400 houses, including PPR (People's Housing Projects) flats and now there are almost 1,000 houses that have been bought and owned.

"In another two or three years, we expect to get a total of 4,000 houses to implement the Smart Rent programme," he said at the Selangor Penyayang roadshow in Taman Kosas, Ampang here yesterday.

Amirudin said so far the response of the tenants has been very good with 99 per cent of them continuing to make repayments.

"The special feature of this scheme is that 30 per cent of the rent will be refunded after a period of five years and this can help those who intend to buy a house by using the money that we returned," he said.

The Smart Rent scheme provides an opportunity for the low and middle-income groups who are unable to own Rumah Selangorku to own their own homes.
