Workers empowerment unit to host job expo, help more people get employed

SHAH ALAM, June 15 — The Selangor Workers Empowerment Unit (Unit Pemberdayaan Pekerja Selangor or UPPS) plans to organise a large-scale job expo to create job opportunities for the people of this state, particularly the unemployed.

Its chief coordinator S Vijayan said that the matter would be proposed to state executive councillor for workers empowerment V Ganabatirau in the near future following the success of a series of the Jelajah JobCare roadshows that began at the end of February.

“The event may be hosted in a hybrid manner on a larger scale, with job seekers having the option of attending in person or participating in an online interview.

“In comparison to the previous job fair, which had 20 companies participating, the expo will include more employers from diverse sectors,” he told SelangorKini.

The expo, according to Vijayan, is in line with the goal of lowering Selangor's unemployment rate, which is now at 2.9 per cent.

“If UPPS can assist in lowering the rate to 2.8 per cent, that would suffice. We are hoping that the plans for the expo would be agreed upon,” he said.

On February 26, the JobCare Tour was launched in stages by UPPS, with ten series taking place in nine districts across the state.

The effort is an initiative in collaboration with the Social Security Organisation (Socso), to assist low, medium, and high-skilled workers who have lost their jobs as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fifteen local companies participated in the programme, which offered approximately 3,000 employment openings across a range of industries.

Throughout the seven series of the roadshow, a total of 641 people were employed in manufacturing, manufacturing, ports, logistics, and shipping.
