KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 — The Selangor government is ready to collaborate with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to increase the number of Muslim traders getting the halal certification.

State executive councillor for halal industry Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni said there are 4,000 halal certificate holders in Selangor, with another 2,000 applications being processed.

“Therefore, we welcome any NGOs who want to collaborate with the state government to help the entrepreneurs get the halal certificate.

“The NGOs are required to get accurate information so they could facilitate the state government to expedite the halal certification registration process,” he said as a panellist in a forum titled Selangor Halal Consumer Policy and Industry Partnership at the Selangor Pavilion during the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (KLIBF) 2022 at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre, here yesterday.

Mohd Zawawi said he hopes home-based entrepreneurs would come forward and meet with the relevant party, such as the Islamic religious department, to solve any issues regarding acquiring the halal certificate.

“Most of the entrepreneurs are home-based. If their businesses are run from home or on agricultural land, there would be some problems such as zoning and preconditions to be met.

“Therefore, I hope the matter could be resolved comprehensively with the related agencies,” he said.

On May 30, the Selangor Malaysian Islamic Chamber of Commerce (DPIM) informed that they are formulating a programme to make it easier for entrepreneurs to obtain halal certificates.

Its chairman Mohd Yahya Mat Sahri said the decision was made following public complaints, particularly traders.
